About
Point by Point Studio preserves and expands the practice of weaving by creating opportunities for people to learn, make, repair, and discover the possibilities of what their hands can do.
A frayed chair seat can be rewoven instead of discarded. A traditional basketry technique can find new life in a contemporary design. Weaving can be something you learn simply because you’re curious, or a skill you develop into a meaningful livelihood.
What began as a defection from the corporate conveyor belt has become something larger—a way of putting our long-held beliefs into practice and sharing them with others: that repair is meaningful, that practical skills are worth learning, that working with your hands can be both unmistakably human and economically viable, and that communities are stronger when people teach one another what they know.
Our Story
Ghermayn Baker and Christina Powers founded Point by Point Studio in Long Beach, CA in 2022.
Ghermayn made his way to Long Beach from the opposite coast—Fernandina Beach, FL—with a few stops in between. He studied Arabic Language & Literature at Dartmouth College, and later built a career in marketing in New York and Los Angeles. A lifelong maker with a deep love of patterns, Ghermayn’s curiosity first drew him to caning and seat weaving, and that curiosity has fueled his learning ever since—through practice (lots of trial, lots of error) and the generosity of other craftspeople. He was awarded the Furniture Society’s Educational Grant to study basketry at the John C. Campbell Folk School and was later selected for the folk school’s Traditional Craft Mentorship Program focused on chair weaving.
Christina is a proud 562 “boomerang,” born and raised in neighboring Seal Beach before returning to Long Beach. After earning a BA in American Studies from Northwestern University, she spent the next ten years in management consulting and international development, living and working across six continents. All that movement eventually brought her back to grow where she was planted: to build a life where the place she lives and the work she does are inextricably intertwined. Today, Christina brings that same approach to building the Point by Point community—nurturing relationships with partners and clients, developing classes and workshops, and creating the environments and experiences that invite people into the world of weaving.
Together, Ghermayn and Christina aim to live point by point: grounded in the present, taking each day and swing as it comes. They live in historic California Heights with their dogs, Tofu and Lucy.
